This series of prints explores the concept of a 'meme' that has been embraced by the government and forced upon the people through a campaign of propaganda.  In this upside down take on the Orwellian state, one of mankind's basic instincts (the search for the easier way) has been deemed against the rules.  Doing things 'the hard way' is the only way to live.

이번에 전시되는 판화들은 정부에 의해 채택되고, 선전(宣傳)적 캠페인을 통해 사람들에게 강요되는 ‘밈(meme)’을 표현해내고자 했다. 왜곡된 버전으로 선보이는 ‘오웰리언(조지 오웰의 소설 「1984」에서 나타나는 선전적이고 통제적인 정부)’ 국가에서, 더 쉬운 방법을 택하고자 하는 사람의 기본적인 욕망은 규칙에 의해 금지된다. 이 세계에서는 무엇이든 ‘힘들게’ 해야만 한다.

One of the basic rules that the people of this world have grown up with is that using screw drivers to put in screws is considered too easy.  The idea of taking the convenient road is against the rules, and therefore the hammer is ‘the only way.’   We can imagine other rules that might exist in this backwards world, but this series of prints only lets us view this one aspect.  

이러한 세상에서 사람들은 드라이버로 나사를 고정하는 것은 너무 쉬운 방법이라고 규율처럼 배우며 자라왔다. 편리한 방법을 선택한다는 것은 규율을 어긴다는 뜻이다. 망치를 사용해 나사를 고정하는 것만이 ‘옳은 방법’이 된다. 망치와 나사 외에도 이런 세상에서 있을 법한 여러 다른 규칙들을 상상해볼 수 있다. 하지만 이번 전시에서는 단 한가지 규칙만을 집중해서 보여주기로 했다.

 When did these people begin to live ‘the hard way?’  Where did this idea come from?  As with many ingrained aspects of a culture, we don’t exactly know.  This mystery breeds frustration and there are those who wish to live an easier life.  They are labeled ‘the enemy.’

대체 이 사람들은 언제부터 ‘힘든 길’로 가기를 결정했나? 이런 생각은 대체 어디에서 나왔나? 뿌리깊게 박힌 문화 각각에 대한 이유를 찾기 어려운 것과 마찬가지로, 우리는 이 질문들의 정답을 알지 못한다. 이러한 세상에 대한 좌절감과 함께, 몇몇은 ‘편리함’을 소망한다. 그러나 그들은 ‘적’으로 치부되고 만다.
